Oct 2025Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
On 9 October 2025, at about 19:42, a fire broke out at the Centron data centre in the Hallstadt area of Bamberg after maintenance work. The operator said the incident involved the main low-voltage distribution and the associated UPS system. The local fire service put the fire out quickly, and Centron said no one was harmed. Centron said redundant infrastructure kept services online, while also apologising for temporary interruptions or connection issues with some services. The size of the fire and how long it burned are not reported.
Contributing factors
Centron said its own analysis found the disorder was due to human misconduct related to maintenance work. That finding has not been independently confirmed.
Lessons learned
- Work on UPS systems and low-voltage distribution needs a second check before equipment is returned to service.
- A binding checklist before recommissioning can catch steps missed after maintenance.
- Extra training and quality checks after an incident can reduce the chance of a repeat, even where redundancy limits the effect on services.
