A fire began at 13:00 BST on Tuesday 29 March 2022 at an electricity substation on Castor Lane in Poplar, east London. It initially cut power to 28,000 homes. By late evening, 2,700 homes in E1 and E14 were still affected. Engineering teams worked through the night. UK Power Networks later said the vast majority of supplies in the E1 area had been restored, while a small number of properties around Narrow Street in E14 remained without power. The London Fire Brigade said the cause was still unknown. There was major traffic disruption and Docklands Light Railway services were suspended.

  1. Operators should maintain rapid response plans for substation fires to minimise customer outages.
  2. Coordination with emergency services and local authorities supports faster restoration and public communication.
  3. Backup communication methods help customers during extended power loss.
