Solar panel and battery fire at Anglesey bungalow

What happened

A fire broke out at a bungalow in Min-yr-Afon, Tyn-y-gongl, near Benllech on Anglesey. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the cause was an electrical fault and that a solar panel and batteries were gutted. The resident got out after breathing in smoke and was reported not to have been injured. Two crews attended and used breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera, a CO2 extinguisher and a ventilation fan.

The bungalow is part of an independent living complex run by Clwyd Alyn Housing, which said solar panels, air source heat pumps and batteries were being installed and that it had disconnected the batteries at Min Yr Afon while the facts were established.

Contributing factors

The fire service reported an electrical fault. The report does not confirm which component failed, or where the batteries were installed.

1. After a fire in residential solar panels and batteries, isolate similar units on the same site until the fault is found.
2. Housing operators must record battery locations and isolation points so crews can act before arrival.
