Firefighters attended a house in Old Basing on 21 May 2022 after smoke was seen coming from the roof. A nearby business raised the alarm and the property was evacuated. Crews from several stations arrived just before 3pm, found the roof well alight, and used four hose reel jets and an aerial ladder. The incident commander said it was believed the fire was caused by solar panels on the roof. No one was injured. The roof and part of the first floor were badly damaged.
The cause has not been confirmed. The incident commander said it was believed the fire started in solar panels on the roof. No further technical detail was reported.
- A nearby observer who reports smoke early can give occupants time to leave before fire crews arrive.
- Where a rooftop fire is only believed to involve solar panels, the cause should stay unconfirmed until a fire investigation reports it.
- A roof fire at a house with solar panels may need both ground hose reels and an aerial appliance.
