What happened
On 8 July 2026 a fire broke out at the Springwood ward, a mental health unit at Malton Hospital in North Yorkshire, operated by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. The building was evacuated safely and no one was harmed. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service investigated and established that the fire most likely started at one of the solar panels installed on the roof of the building.
Because of the extensive damage the panels sustained during the fire, investigators were unable to determine further details about the specific cause of ignition. The trust confirmed that fire safety systems at the site operated as intended when the fire started, and that fire safety risk assessments covering the building and its electrical infrastructure were current at the time.

The likely origin was one of the rooftop solar panels, but fire damage to the panels prevented investigators from establishing the precise technical cause.
