What happened
A fire broke out at outbuildings, including a garage, an unused cattery, two sheds and a summerhouse, on West End Road in Southampton shortly before 10:30 BST. The fire spread to the neighbouring electricity substation on West End Road, operated by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), causing a power cut affecting around 2,000 properties. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the blaze using breathing apparatus by shortly after midday.
SSEN restored power quickly to most customers, with the remaining 130 properties closest to the fire reconnected early in the afternoon. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation at the time of reporting.
Contributing factors
The fire originated in nearby residential outbuildings and spread to the adjacent substation on West End Road; the precise ignition cause was not confirmed in the source.
