What happened
The Daily Echo reported on 15 September 2020 that fire crews tackled a small fire in an electricity sub-station at Hamble Lane, Hamble (Hamble-Le-Rice), Hampshire. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called shortly after noon, with five appliances from Hamble, Hightown and St Mary's and support vehicles attending. Two breathing apparatus sets and positive pressure ventilation were used to clear smoke, and the stop message was received at 1.02pm. Hampshire police said they were called at 12.24pm and that there was no requirement for officers to attend. The operator, the cause, any damage, any effect on electricity supply and whether anyone was injured were not reported.
Lessons learned
- Record the time, equipment involved and stop time for every sub-station fire so later reports can be checked against the first account.
- Where a fire service isolates or ventilates a sub-station, the network operator should confirm supply status even if police are not required.
- Publish investigation findings when they exist, so other operators can see whether similar equipment is involved.
