What happened
On the evening of 22 May 2025, emergency dispatchers in The Woodlands, Texas received multiple 911 calls reporting an explosion and large smoke cloud near The Woodlands Mall along the I-45 feeder road. Fire crews confirmed a large electrical transformer had exploded, igniting nearby trees. After the utility, Entergy, confirmed power had been shut off, firefighters extinguished the blaze. The explosion caused power outages affecting areas north and south of the mall, requiring multiple elevator rescues.
A separate large grass and woods fire broke out simultaneously on the east side of I-45, which was brought under control by several fire departments. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the transformer explosion was under investigation at the time of reporting.
