What happened
An underground electrical transformer exploded at the corner of Conti and Bourbon Streets in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, during a public holiday weekend, causing flames to erupt through the roadway surface. The explosion knocked out power to approximately 900 customers and prompted police to evacuate several blocks, including a hotel, as a precaution. Fire crews worked to control the flames while crews from Entergy New Orleans, the operator and owner of the transformer vault, attempted to restore power.
During the response, an individual threatened a repair worker with a firearm, delaying restoration efforts and requiring police intervention. Drones were used by police to provide aerial and thermal imaging support to responders. No injuries were reported. Power was fully restored to the affected area by the following morning, roughly nine hours after the explosion. Entergy New Orleans stated the cause was under investigation and believed to be related to a fire beneath the underground vault housing the transformer.
Contributing factors
The exact technical cause of the transformer failure was still under investigation at time of reporting, with early indications pointing to a fire within the underground vault. Restoration of power was delayed after a member of the public threatened a utility lineman during repair works.
