Home battery storage system explodes during shed fire near Rostock, Germany

A fire broke out on 5 June in a wooden shed at a single-family home in Bentwisch, near Rostock, Germany. A battery energy storage system installed at the property had overheated before fire crews arrived. While firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze, the battery exploded, blowing the roof off the shed and causing the structure to collapse. Flying debris from the explosion damaged two neighbouring properties. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries during the incident. Authorities estimated total property damage at about €40,000 (around $47,000). The public prosecutor's office has appointed a fire investigator and police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fire and subsequent explosion.

The battery storage system had overheated prior to the fire brigade's arrival, and the resulting explosion occurred during active firefighting operations, according to the local fire service.

  1. Firefighters responding to fires involving battery storage systems should be briefed on the risk of delayed thermal runaway and explosion even after initial suppression efforts begin.
  2. Residential battery installations, particularly those in outbuildings such as sheds, warrant clear signage and documentation to alert emergency responders to the presence of stored energy hazards.
  3. Investigations following such incidents should examine whether pre-existing overheating conditions were detectable and whether monitoring or shutdown systems could have prevented escalation.
