Balcony battery storage unit catches fire in family home in Neuenhaus

A balcony battery energy storage system caught fire in a residential home in Neuenhaus, Lower Saxony, on 25 March 2025. A neighbour noticed smoke and alerted emergency services, who brought the fire under control within two hours. The house was unoccupied at the time. The battery, a Zendure 2.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate unit paired with a 1.78 kW balcony solar system, had reportedly been activated only two weeks before the fire. The blaze damaged the home's heating and hot water systems and caused extensive damage to the utility room where the battery was installed. The unit was located in an annex whose roof structure required inspection afterwards. The rest of the house remained habitable, though the occupants temporarily relocated. The exact cause of the fire had not been established at the time of reporting, and an investigation was under way.

  1. Even lithium iron phosphate batteries, generally regarded as more fire-resistant than nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistries, can still ignite and cause significant property damage.
  2. Newly commissioned residential storage systems may be at particular risk in the early weeks of operation, warranting close monitoring after activation.
  3. Locating battery storage in enclosed utility spaces without adequate fire separation can allow fire to spread to adjoining building systems such as heating and hot water infrastructure.
  4. Early detection by a member of the public and rapid fire service response can limit the extent of damage and prevent escalation.
