Possible explosion at Enschede substation injures worker and cuts power

On the morning of 30 April 2025, a power outage began in Enschede after a possible explosion at a high-voltage substation on the Vechtstraat. A worker was injured. The outage started at about 11 a.m. and lasted around two hours, affecting more than 20,500 homes in Enschede and the nearby villages of Lonneker and Glanerbrug. Paramedics and firefighters were sent to the Vechtstraat at about 11:05 a.m. A spokesperson for the safety region said they had no knowledge of an explosion and that the labour inspectorate would have to investigate. Emergency crews dealt with at least six reports of people stuck in lifts. The hospital in Enschede and the University of Twente were not affected. Shops, restaurants and museums closed because of the outage.

Not reported. A nearby resident said they heard a loud bang. The safety region said it had no knowledge of an explosion, and the cause had not been established.
