What happened
At about 4:15pm on 30 August 2020, several people in the Village of Alden Bridge, The Woodlands, Texas, called 911 after hearing an explosion. The Woodlands Fire Department sent Truck 104 and Engine 102 to the intersection of Trillium and Research Forest. They found that a ground-mounted electrical transformer had catastrophically failed and started a brush fire. Firefighters brought the fire under control quickly. They completed final extinguishment after Entergy verified that the area had been de-energised. Power remained out in the area afterwards.
Contributing factors
The source does not report the cause of the transformer failure.
Lessons learned
- Ground-mounted transformers can fail catastrophically and throw burning material into surrounding vegetation, so vegetation clearance around them should be checked.
- Fire crews should coordinate with the utility so that the equipment is confirmed de-energised before final extinguishment.
- Operators should plan for outage communications and restoration when a transformer fails in a populated area.
