What happened
On Sunday 17 August 2025, a fire broke out at a substation near Kings Nature Park in North Logan, Utah. Beginning at about 11:20 am, the fire was reported at approximately 5 to 10 acres near the mouth of Green Canyon, and firefighters were supported by aircraft dropping water and retardant. Rocky Mountain Power cut power to the area at about 12:30 pm as a safety precaution. The utility said about 4,000 customers were expected to be without electricity.
Firefighters reportedly saved wooden power poles near the substation and extinguished the fire, and power was reported restored by just before 3 pm. Homes near the fire were deemed safe and no evacuations were made.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire had not been established and was under investigation at the time of reporting. Residents received conflicting estimates of when power would return.
Lessons learned
- Review vegetation clearance and fire breaks around substations in dry, fire-prone terrain.
- Plan precautionary de-energisation in advance and give customers consistent restoration estimates, since residents received conflicting timings.
- Agree arrangements with local fire services so that poles and equipment near a fire can be protected quickly.
