What happened
Overnight, downed power lines crossed Highway 26 at Murray Boulevard in Portland, Oregon, and some lines landed on and around a black Bronco. All lanes of the highway were closed at Murray Boulevard for several hours while Portland General Electric crews carried out repairs. People near Murray Boulevard called 911 to report an explosion and said they believed a transformer had blown. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue said the driver of the Bronco drove over the lines, despite being advised not to. The highway reopened just after 5:30 a.m. The source does not report any injuries, and does not confirm the cause of the failure.
Contributing factors
Not reported. Callers believed a transformer had blown, but the source does not confirm this.
Lessons learned
- Utilities should check for failed transformers and damaged overhead lines after reports of an explosion near a road, and should close or guard the road quickly.
- Emergency responders should warn motorists clearly not to approach or drive over fallen energised lines.
- Operators should coordinate with traffic authorities so that road closures are set up quickly and lifted as soon as the lines are safe.
