What happened
GE Renewable Energy is reported to be investigating the collapse of one of its newest onshore wind turbines, a Cypress model, at a project in Lithuania. Recharge News reported this on 16 March 2022. The report does not give the date of the collapse, the project name, the developer or owner, the number of turbines, any injuries, the cause, the extent of damage or the time the turbine was out of service. The manufacturer's investigation was still under way at publication and no findings had been published.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The manufacturer had not announced a cause at the time of publication.
Lessons learned
- Where a manufacturer opens an investigation into a turbine collapse, operators of the same model can ask for its findings and check whether their own units are affected.
- Failures of recently introduced models may take some time to be explained publicly, so operators should monitor for updates.
More lessons on structural integrity and turbines, detection and monitoring, from every incident on the register.
