What happened
On Tuesday evening, 27 October 2026, a traction power substation at MARTA's Brookhaven station on the Gold Line in DeKalb County, Georgia, caught fire, according to MARTA and a report by WSB-TV. MARTA said rail service was disrupted and that all patrons were evacuated from the station by MARTA Police. Rail power was de-energised and DeKalb Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene. Fire crews extinguished the fire at the traction power substation.
A bus bridge was set up between Lenox and Chamblee stations, and MARTAConnect was put in effect for Lenox, Brookhaven and Chamblee stations. Service delays continued while emergency personnel remained on site. MARTA said it would provide further updates. The cause of the fire was not reported at the time of publication.

Lessons learned
- Traction power substations need fire detection and automatic isolation so that a fault can be contained before it forces an evacuation.
- Operators should rehearse evacuation and de-energisation procedures with police and fire services so that stations can be cleared quickly and safely.
- Rail operators should prepare replacement bus services and passenger messaging in advance so that disruption from a power equipment fault can be managed promptly.
