What happened
A fire broke out in an electrical cabin located alongside a construction site at Palazzo Lucatelli, a building in the historic centre of Trapani, Sicily, which has long been undergoing renovation. The provincial command of the fire service attended with several vehicles to extinguish the flames and make the area safe. The fire involved the cabin, and further checks were needed to assess the condition of the installation and rule out any risks.
Technicians from Enel also attended to check the electricity network, identify the cause and look for any further faults. After the first operations, the block was left without electrical power. The circumstances that caused the fire remained to be established at the time of reporting, and technical checks were aimed at ensuring the safety of the installation and restoring supply.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The cause of the fire was still to be clarified at the time of the article.
Lessons learned
- Electrical cabins close to building or renovation sites should be assessed for fire risk and protected from site activity, with the network operator and contractors agreeing access and safety arrangements.
- After a cabin fire, the installation should be inspected for damage before supply is restored, to rule out further faults.
- Fire services and network operators should coordinate quickly so that the affected area can be made safe and power restored without delay.
