What happened
According to a report from Haber 7 relaying Anadolu Agency, an explosion occurred at the Lara Trafo Merkezi (Lara transformer substation) in Aksu district, Antalya, Türkiye, during maintenance work. The substation belongs to Türkiye Elektrik İletim AŞ (TEİAŞ), and the report identifies it as part of the company's 19th Regional Directorate. Five workers at the substation were injured and suffered burns to various parts of their bodies. Company vehicles took them to nearby hospitals.
Two of the injured were reported as discharged, while the others remained in treatment. A nearby security camera recorded the blast, which showed a fireball followed by black smoke rising into the air. The area around the affected transformer was closed off with safety tape. The cause of the explosion had not been determined at the time of reporting. The incident date of 2 March 2016 is taken from the article text.
Contributing factors
Not determined at the time of reporting. The explosion happened during maintenance work, but the report does not say what work was being carried out or whether isolation procedures were in place.
Lessons learned
- Confirm that high-voltage equipment is isolated, earthed and locked out before maintenance starts, and check this on site rather than relying on paperwork alone.
- Keep an accurate record of who is working inside a substation and where they are, so that injured people can be counted and treated quickly.
- Use CCTV and other recording at substations to support the investigation of blasts and fireballs.
