As Hurricane Milton moved through Florida, several electrical transformers exploded in Cape Coral. Video submitted to Gulf Coast News and Weather shows a transformer exploding off Santa Barbara by Cape Parkway. NBC2 crews reported seeing multiple transformers explode in the area, lighting up the night sky. The Lee County Sheriff's Office posted footage showing several transformers exploding at the same time while deputies were on patrol. As of 12:25 a.m. on Thursday 10 October 2024, more than 290,000 customers were without power across Southwest Florida's counties, with significant outages along the west coast. The source does not name the transformer owner or utility, the equipment age, or the exact time of the failures.

The source reports the explosions during the passage of Hurricane Milton but does not state a cause, equipment fault or protection failure.

  1. Transformers in storm-exposed areas should be inspected and their protection and isolation settings reviewed before a hurricane arrives.
  2. Operators should plan for several simultaneous equipment failures and keep public and emergency responders clear of energised equipment during storms.
  3. Operators should keep detailed failure records, including time, location and equipment identity, to support post-event analysis.
