What happened
Shortly before midnight, a pickup truck crashed into electrical equipment at Irvine Avenue and Ramsey Street in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to police, who said the vehicle flipped over around 11:45 pm. Authorities suspect the impact caused a transformer fire and downed power lines more than half a mile away. St. Paul firefighters believe downed live power lines then came into contact with Patrick McGovern's pub on West Seventh Avenue, igniting a fire in its turret.
Xcel Energy said 9,200 customers initially lost power, with the outage spreading across several blocks, and most customers were restored within 90 minutes. Pub staff reported that people ran from the building when they saw flashes and that nobody was inside when the fire started. The upper floor suffered fire and water damage, and the pub reopened by Saturday afternoon. A resident of an apartment above the pub reported ceiling and soot damage and moved out temporarily.
Contributing factors
Police said a pickup truck hit the electrical equipment, which is the trigger reported by authorities. Authorities suspect a transformer fire and downed power lines caused the outage. The pub owner described the location as a weak point in the grid, where severed wires were flying around. Live wires contacting the building are reported as the ignition source. The source does not state the cause of the vehicle crash.
Lessons learned
- Electrical equipment at street level, such as transformers and poles, should be assessed for vehicle impact risk and protected where it sits close to the carriageway.
- Downed or severed lines should be treated as live, with a wide exclusion zone set by responders and utility crews until they are confirmed dead.
- Operators of buildings near transformers should review fire exposure from live conductors and confirm that upper floors and roof features are covered by emergency plans.
