What happened
Volta River Authority (VRA) transformer lines in the Area Two neighbourhood of Sunyani caught fire in the early hours of Thursday 3 October 2024. Residents reported hearing an explosion before seeing the transformer on fire. Attempts by residents to bring the fire under control were unsuccessful, but personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived promptly and dealt with the situation. The fire caused intermittent power outages and a total blackout in parts of the municipality. No casualties were reported. At the time of reporting, at around 10:00, VRA personnel were working on the transformer line to restore power.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire was unknown at the time of reporting.
Lessons learned
- Utilities should inspect distribution transformers and their connecting lines regularly, because the cause of a transformer fire can be difficult to establish quickly.
- Clear arrangements for alerting the local fire service to substation and transformer fires can limit damage and speed up the response.
- Restoration plans should include timely public communication about outages, since residents in affected areas may be unsure how long power will be off.
