Lessons learned
- Substations close to major roads can disrupt traffic quickly, so operators should agree road closure and reopening procedures with local police and highway authorities in advance.
- Early confirmation that no hazardous substances have been released, and that the facility is not in danger of spreading fire, helps emergency services manage public messaging.
- Operators should publish a root cause and damage summary after substation fires so that other utilities can learn from them.
