What happened
Civil Protection forces in Fayoum governorate, working with local residents, brought under control a fire that broke out in an electricity transformer in front of a fuel station in Abjij village, Fayoum, Egypt. The report states that no human injuries occurred. Security authorities in Fayoum received notice of the fire, and Civil Protection units went to the site immediately. The fire caused a power cut to the surrounding area. Authorities said they are taking the necessary steps to establish the cause of the fire and the circumstances in which it started. The report does not give the transformer's owner or operator, its capacity, or the time at which the fire was extinguished.
Contributing factors

Lessons learned
- Keep transformers and their enclosures clear of combustible material, and inspect them regularly for overheating, oil leaks and insulation damage, particularly where a fuel station or other flammable store is nearby.
- Agree notification and isolation procedures with local emergency services so that supply can be cut quickly and the fire attended without delay.
- Plan for loss of supply to neighbouring premises, including fuel dispensing, when a transformer fails.
