What happened
A fire broke out at the main power station in Farafra Centre, New Valley Governorate, Egypt, after a transformer inside the station exploded, according to a report by the Mawlana news portal. The blast cut power to Farafra city and its surrounding villages. A source at the Egyptian Holding Company for Electricity said emergency teams deployed emergency units and diesel generators to supply the affected areas while efforts continued to bring the fire under control and extinguish it.
Staff from the New Valley electricity distribution sector went to the site to supervise the response and restore supply. The report says teams were still working to restore power and deal with the incident. It does not report injuries, the cause of the explosion, whether the fire has been put out, or when power was restored.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The source does not give the cause of the transformer explosion.
Lessons learned
- Transformers at substations need protection, oil or gas monitoring and fire suppression so that a failure does not spread to the wider station.
- Towns served by one substation should have pre-arranged mobile generation and diesel supplies ready to restore power quickly during an outage.
- Operators should record and publish the cause of transformer failures so that other operators can check similar equipment.
More lessons on detection and monitoring, outages, backup supply and restoration, from every incident on the register.
