What happened
A fire at an electricity substation cut power to the village of Portpatrick in south west Scotland, United Kingdom, on Wednesday 10 January 2018. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident shortly after 11:00. Scottish Power said it was at the scene quickly, and all the affected properties were later reconnected. The company apologised to customers for the disruption and said the cause of the incident was being investigated.
During the power cut, the community resilience team of Dumfries and Galloway Council checked on elderly residents. The report did not give the number of properties affected, the length of the power cut, the equipment involved or the cause of the fire, and no injuries were mentioned.
Lessons learned
- Substation fires can interrupt supply to entire villages until power is restored by the operator.
- Local councils may conduct welfare checks on residents during outages.
