What happened
An underground transformer fire knocked out power to part of Center City Philadelphia early on Tuesday 30 June 2020. The fire was first noticed beneath the intersection of 21st and Walnut Streets at around 5.30am. About 1,200 customers lost power. PECO and fire crews responded, and traffic was detoured from the area while repairs were under way. There were no reports of injuries. The report did not give a cause or a time for full restoration of supply.
Lessons learned
- Inspect underground vaults, cables and network transformers in dense city centres on a planned cycle, since a fault below a street is hard to see until smoke or fire appears.
- Agree with the fire service how underground electrical fires will be handled, including isolation by the utility before firefighting starts.
- Plan traffic diversions and public exclusion zones around vault fires so that repairs can proceed safely.
