What happened

Firefighters were called to a fire at an electrical substation, described as a power station, on Haverford and County Line roads in Delaware County. PECO said roughly 1,300 customers were without power at one point. Hours later, power had been fully restored. Investigators were still working to find what started the fire.

Contributing factors

PECO said a problem with a transformer could be to blame. The cause had not been confirmed.

Lessons learned

A suspected transformer problem at a distribution substation can cut supply to a large number of customers even when power is restored within hours.
Keep the cause open until investigators confirm whether the transformer was involved.
Have a restoration plan ready so supply can return while the fault is still being examined.
