What happened

A fire in the company substation at the Tolko Industries Armstrong division knocked out power to the plywood and lumber plants. Neither plant was in operation at the time. The extent of the damage had not been determined when the report was published. An onsite cogeneration plant was not affected because it is supplied from a different substation.

Lessons learned

A fire in a site substation can remove supply to an entire industrial site even when process plant is not running.
Placing onsite generation on a separate substation can limit the effect of a single substation fire.
Damage and restoration time should be confirmed before operations resume.
