Sparks from farmers burning grass and agricultural waste in fields adjacent to the Rudra solar power plant in Laxmapur village reached the site. Dry grass throughout the plant ignited and spread rapidly in the wind. Security staff used carbon dioxide cylinders and water to contain the fire. Fire tenders from Achampet attended and extinguished the blaze after more than two hours. Minor damage occurred to wiring and other materials, but no major asset loss was reported.
Contributing factors
Dry grass on site, proximity to agricultural burning, and wind aiding fire spread.
Lessons learned
Maintain vegetation control around and within solar arrays to reduce fuel load.
Establish rapid communication protocols with local fire services for external ignition sources.
Ensure on-site suppression equipment is immediately accessible and staff are trained in its use.
