What happened
A large fire broke out in dry fodder at a storage area in Jhor village, Rajsamand district, Rajasthan. About 50 bigha of dry fodder burned. Flames reached a nearby solar energy plant, burned electrical cables there, and were reported to have damaged arrangements linked to the plant. Fire crews from Rajsamand and Amet attended, with help from local residents. No deaths were reported. The cause was not known. Losses running into lakhs of rupees were feared, mainly from fodder and other equipment.
Contributing factors
The cause had not been established. Officials were reported to be checking whether a short circuit or another cause was involved. Dry fodder was the main fuel, and the fire then reached cables at a nearby solar plant.
Lessons learned
- Keep stored combustible material, including dry fodder, clear of solar plant cabling and other electrical equipment.
- Notify fire services quickly when a fodder or vegetation fire starts near an energy asset.
- Review how material is stored around solar installations so a field fire is less likely to reach cables.
