Dec 2023Published 2 Oct 2026

Companies named in this entry: City Power

In the early hours of Saturday 2 December 2023, a blaze extensively damaged the Observatory Substation in Johannesburg. City Power said equipment inside the control room was damaged. The fire left Houghton estate and several suburbs east of Johannesburg without power. By 3 December, City Power said technicians had made progress with repairs. Officials said full restoration could take 5 to 7, but the available report does not state the unit. Johannesburg Water's Yeoville reservoir was also affected and was later reported restored. The cause was still under investigation.

The cause had not been reported. The account says only that the fire was being investigated and that equipment in the control room was damaged.
