Transformer fire in La Grange Park destroys cars after a pole comes down

What happened

On the afternoon of 4 August 2026, firefighters were called to the Arbor Animal Hospital on East 31st Street in La Grange Park, Illinois, after a utility pole appeared to have come down in the parking lot at the rear of the building, together with two transformers and three main power lines. Fire officials said oil from the transformers caught fire and produced large flames. Four cars were destroyed in the parking lot of the adjacent medical office building, and other vehicles were damaged.

The animal hospital, a BP petrol station and the medical office building were evacuated. Downed lines initially hampered firefighting. ComEd de-energised the lines and the fire was extinguished. Power to the wider area was restored within several hours. No injuries to people or animals were reported. Fire officials also reported damage to the driveway, parking pavement and some concrete.

Contributing factors

Officials said it appeared a utility pole came down, bringing transformers and power lines with it. Oil from the transformers then ignited. Why the pole came down was not reported.
