Transformer explosion sparks large fire at Norridge substation

A large fire broke out on a Sunday afternoon at a ComEd electrical substation at 8275 W. Montrose Ave. in Norridge, Illinois. First responders said a transformer at the substation blew up and sparked the fire. Video footage showed black smoke billowing into the sky, watched by people from the road; the site is behind a grocery store and near a playfield. Fire departments from several jurisdictions, including Park Ridge and Elmwood Park, responded. The substation is unmanned and no one was injured.
