Blade detaches from turbine at Future Generation Wind, Plymouth, Massachusetts
EIR-0060In November 2025, in the early afternoon, a blade detached from a turbine at Future Generation Wind, a small onshore wind farm in the Buzzards Bay area of Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, operated by RWE. Reports described the turbine as around 90 metres to blade tip and the detached section as roughly 23 to 30 metres long. The blade came to rest several hundred feet from the tower base on low-lying agricultural land. A member of the public first reported the event after noticing that one of the three blades was missing. The local fire service attended and found no hazards in the immediate aftermath. There were no injuries and no occupied buildings were struck. The site comprises four turbines of about 2 MW each, commissioned in 2016, with maintenance carried out by the turbine manufacturer under contract. Following the event RWE shut down all four turbines at the site as a precaution and began a root cause analysis with the manufacturer. The state environmental regulator and the local building inspector were notified and carried out their own reviews. The local authority stated publicly that oversight of turbine safety rests with the permit holder and property owner rather than with the town. The fallen blade was visible from a nearby highway and the event attracted considerable local attention.
No cause had been published at the time of reporting. RWE and the turbine manufacturer stated that a root cause analysis had been started and that the investigation would be conducted jointly. A neighbour was reported in the media as having heard a squealing noise from the turbine in the period before the failure, which had reportedly stopped shortly beforehand. This is an unverified public observation and had not been linked to the failure by any published investigation. Regulators and the local inspector were notified but no findings were in the public domain.
- Shut down sister turbines of the same type, batch and service history at a site after an unexplained blade failure, and keep them down until the root cause is understood or ruled out as generic.
- Treat blade release as a credible event when assessing land use around each turbine, and formally record throw distance assumptions and any exclusion arrangements for nearby roads, dwellings and third party land.
- Check that condition monitoring and SCADA alarm configurations would capture the same indicators that people nearby can hear, including changes in noise, vibration or pitch system behaviour, and log and investigate third party noise reports as potential condition data.
- Establish a route for members of the public and neighbouring landowners to report unusual turbine behaviour directly to the operator, and confirm that such reports reach maintenance staff.
- Confirm in writing which party is responsible for structural integrity and inspection of operating turbines where the local authority has no technical oversight role, and check that this responsibility survives changes of ownership and of maintenance contractor.
- Escalate blade inspection regimes as turbines pass ten years of service, including internal and bond line inspection and lightning damage checks, and hold an explicit plan for blade replacement or repowering.
- Apply the same incident response, notification and investigation standards at small sites as at large fleets, since regulatory and community scrutiny does not scale with installed capacity.
- Prepare a notification list in advance covering the environmental regulator, the local building authority and the landowner, so that reporting after a structural failure is prompt and consistent.
