Engie wind farm damaged by high winds in South Dakota

June 2026Published 1 Oct 2026

Hurricane-force winds on 29 June damaged more than 20 of the 92 turbines at the Triple H Wind farm in Hyde County, northwest of Sioux Falls. Engie North America said it was assessing the damage, and the site remained out of service. A state of emergency was declared following the storm.

Hurricane-force winds from the 29 June storm. The precise damage to each turbine has not been reported.

  1. Extreme wind can damage many turbines at one site and take the whole farm out of service.
  2. Operators should finish a structured damage assessment before returning turbines to service after hurricane-force winds.
  3. Site status should be reported separately from a wider storm emergency so the asset outage is not confused with the regional declaration.
