Wind turbine tower collapse and generator fire in Western Nebraska, cause under investigation
EIR-0059In January 2024, during the morning, a turbine at an onshore wind site in Western Nebraska, United States, failed structurally. Local fire services were called after the failure was reported. Responders found the tower twisted and folded over, with the generator burning on the ground and producing black smoke. Local emergency management reported that no injuries occurred. The cause was not determined at the time of reporting and an investigation was under way. Public reporting also noted that details of an earlier tower failure elsewhere in the same region had taken several months to become publicly available.
No cause was publicly stated during the immediate response phase. Public reporting recorded only that the tower had folded over, that the generator was alight on the ground, and that an investigation had been opened. No source information is available on tower connection condition, foundation condition, control system behaviour or wind conditions at the time of failure, and no inference on these points should be drawn from the available reporting.
- Treat catastrophic tower collapse with a subsequent ground level fire as a credible, low frequency but high consequence scenario in site emergency plans, not solely nacelle fires at height.
- Agree in advance with local fire and emergency services the exclusion distances, access routes and water or foam availability for a downed turbine, and brief them on hazards specific to a collapsed machine including residual electrical energy in cabling, spilled oils and lubricants, and burning composite material.
- Ensure structural inspection programmes cover tower section flange bolts and welds, and foundation condition, as well as tower wall condition, with records of bolt tension checks retained.
- Establish a defined post event process for isolating the affected circuit, confirming isolation to responders and preserving debris in place for investigation where it is safe to do so.
- Set an internal timescale and route for sharing preliminary factual information on structural failures with local authorities, insurers and, where turbines of the same type are operated elsewhere, with other operators, so that fleet checks can be considered early.
- Where a comparable failure has occurred previously within the same fleet or region, record whether a fleet wide review was carried out and what it covered, so that any recurrence can be assessed against prior findings.
