What happened
Fire crews were called on a Friday morning to a solar panel farm at the Saint Cloud Nutrient, Energy, and Water (NEW) Recovery Facility, a wastewater treatment plant in St. Cloud, after a transformer caught fire. Firefighters started work around 9 a.m. and were still extinguishing smoke and hot spots at 11.45 a.m. A large plume of smoke was visible, and a news helicopter reported crews working among hundreds of solar panels to fully extinguish the transformer fire. The fire department said no one was injured. The Office of the St. Cloud Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The source identifies a transformer fire at the solar array but does not state the cause, which is under investigation.
Lessons learned
- Transformers at solar sites should be included in thermal monitoring and routine inspection, with clear fire-separation distances from panels and combustibles.
- Fire services need current site plans showing transformer locations and isolation points, because solar arrays stay energised in daylight.
- Operators of co-located utility infrastructure should agree a pre-incident plan with the local fire service covering smoke, hot spots and extended extinguishing time.
