What happened
On the evening of 16 April 2026, smoke was reported coming from the roof of the IKEA store at 7500 S. IKEA Way in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. A rooftop solar panel had caught fire. The building was evacuated as a precaution while the Oak Creek Fire Department responded. Store employees extinguished the small fire before firefighters arrived on scene. Because rooftop solar equipment must be de-energised before crews can safely approach, firefighters waited for maintenance personnel to shut down the system before checking the rest of the rooftop installation.
No injuries were reported. The store reopened to customers later that night. The cause of the fire remained under investigation, with fire officials saying they would work with store maintenance and company representatives to determine what went wrong.
