Roof fire destroys rooftop solar panels at Joliet Ikea warehouse

On 29 April 2025, firefighters were called to an Ikea distribution centre at 650 Emerald Drive in Joliet, Illinois, after reports of heavy smoke coming from the roof. On arrival, roughly one third of the roof was found to be on fire. A total of 81 firefighters attended and took about two hours to extinguish the blaze. The fire caused significant damage to the roof structure, including dozens of rooftop solar panels which appeared to be destroyed. All employees inside the building were evacuated safely with no injuries reported among staff. One firefighter was taken to hospital for treatment for exhaustion after the incident. The cause of the fire was not stated in the report.
