What happened
A transformer exploded in the Ortakent-Yahşi neighbourhood of Bodrum, Muğla province, Turkey, on 8 July 2017, according to initial assessments reported by Haber 7 from Anadolu Agency. The explosion started a fire in an area of grass and scrubland. The wind drove the fire quickly towards the Kargı Sitesi and Bank Evler residential areas. Residents alerted the authorities, and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, the Bodrum Orman İşletme Müdürlüğü and the Muğla 911 Search and Rescue Association attended.
Some residents used hoses from their balconies to wet the areas around their homes. Police and gendarmerie evacuated some houses as a precaution. Two people affected by dense smoke were treated at the scene by 112 emergency teams. The fire was brought under control in about three hours, and around 5 hectares of grass and scrub were damaged. Cooling work continued afterwards.
Contributing factors
The report says the fire spread quickly because of the wind. No other contributing factors are reported.
Lessons learned
- Keep vegetation cleared and firebreaks maintained around transformers and other substation equipment, especially in dry grass and scrub areas.
- Agree procedures with local fire services and municipalities so that a fire at grid equipment can be attacked quickly, before wind carries it to homes.
- Plan precautionary evacuation and smoke protection for nearby residents, and warn them early, since neighbours may be exposed before emergency teams arrive.
