What happened
Shortly before 10 am on Saturday 22 January 2022, a fire broke out in a disused warehouse in via Ponara, Bertinoro, in Italy. Four crews from the Vigili del Fuoco Forlì command and its Cesena detachment attended. Using an aerial ladder, they worked on the roof to extinguish the blaze and limit its spread. The flames had reached the photovoltaic panels on the building. Carabinieri also attended. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was still to be established at the time of reporting.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire had not been established at the time of reporting. The source does not say whether the PV system was operating or how the fire reached the panels.
Lessons learned
- Fires in buildings can reach rooftop PV arrays, so fire-service access and roof-level firefighting should be planned for.
- Operators and owners of buildings with solar arrays should keep records of array location, isolation points and electrical layout so responders can make the system safe quickly.
- Unoccupied buildings need regular inspection and monitoring, since a fire can develop unnoticed.
