What happened
On 26 June 2024, multiple resident groups reported a fire at the Eiger Transmission Substation on Camdeboo Street in Mayberry Park, Alberton, South Africa, following a series of explosions. Two DEMS fire trucks attended. AfriForum Alberton's fire team also responded after the fire service accepted its offer of help. Members were directed to fight veld fires that threatened the southern part of the substation after the veld fire turned back towards the site.
While fighting these fires, the members found a high voltage line that had exploded and snapped, lying on the ground. Once the fires were extinguished, the DEMS firefighters thanked AfriForum for its assistance. The source reports that power later returned, but does not state how long the outage lasted or how many customers were affected.
Contributing factors
A veld fire spread towards the substation and turned back towards it, threatening the site. The source reports a high voltage line that had exploded and snapped, but does not state what caused the line failure or the explosions.
Lessons learned
- Clear vegetation and maintain firebreaks around substations and transmission corridors, because veld fires can reach and threaten electrical equipment.
- Agree roles and communication with volunteer fire groups in advance, so that help is directed safely and they only work where they are trained and equipped to do so.
- Treat any downed high voltage conductor as live, keep people and vehicles clear of it, and isolate the affected line before responders approach.
