What happened
At about 07:04 local time on 17 October 2026, a power outage occurred at the Thu Duc 220kV substation in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The outage cut supply to part of Thu Duc district and affected Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien). According to Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Limited Company (HURC), 14 train services were affected. The Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation (EVNHCMC) said the outage followed force majeure at the substation, which is operated by Power Transmission Company 4.
After the grid was restored, HURC worked with the southern power system operation centre to re-establish the load, and Metro Line 1 resumed service at 07:57. EVNHCMC said it used a remote control system to restore supply to loads, including the metro and households and businesses in Thu Duc.
Contributing factors
The utility described the event as force majeure. No technical cause, equipment fault or failure mode was reported.
Lessons learned
- Rail operators should confirm that traction supply is fed from more than one substation so that a single grid outage does not stop the whole line.
- Remote control switching can restore traction and other loads quickly after an upstream outage, so operators should test these procedures in advance.
- Where an outage is attributed to force majeure, the operator should still publish the technical cause once it is established, so that others can learn from it.
