Wind turbine catches fire and loses blade in Binh Thuan

July 2023Published 2 Oct 2026

A fire broke out on a wind turbine in Tuy Phong District, Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam, on the morning of 26 July 2023. The turbine had a generating capacity of 1.5 megawatts and was one of 20 turbines in the first phase of a wind power project. The fire destroyed the turbine, and one of its three blades fell off shortly afterwards. Authorities carried out firefighting and are working with the project investor to identify the cause.

No injuries were reported, and no damage to nearby property was reported aside from the turbine. The same plant had a separate turbine fire in January 2020, which the report said caused substantial financial loss.

The cause has not been reported. Authorities were still working with the project investor to identify it.

  1. Operators should review fire detection and suppression provisions on existing turbine fleets.
  2. Rapid coordination between site owners and local emergency services limits escalation.
  3. Earlier fires at the same plant warrant targeted inspection of similar machines.
