Wind turbine catches fire near Warrensburg, Illinois, road closed
EIR-0279A wind turbine near Kenney and Hampshire Roads in Warrensburg, Macon County, Illinois, caught fire on a Sunday evening, described by witnesses as a large fireball with burning debris falling to the ground. Five fire departments responded but were unable to actively fight the fire due to the turbine's height, approximately 340 feet, over 500 feet with the blade pointed upward, far exceeding the reach of a standard 100 foot ladder truck. Crews instead monitored the situation, kept the surrounding area clear given nearby agricultural land, and waited for the fire to burn out, which it did by around 11pm. A section of Hampshire Road was closed for at least two days afterwards as a precaution against falling debris. No injuries were reported. The cause remained under investigation at the time of reporting.
