Nacelle fire damages turbine at Waymart Wind Farm near Browndale, Pennsylvania

On the evening of 9 March 2026, residents near Browndale, Pennsylvania, saw one of the 43 turbines at the Waymart Wind Farm, owned by Sequitur Renewables, on fire. The blaze was seen coming from the nacelle, the housing behind the blades that contains the gearbox, generator and electrical systems. Local fire officials were alerted and Browndale Fire Company and Waymart Volunteer Fire Department responded, with Forest City Area Emergency Services on standby. Given the turbine's remote ridge location and the presence of snowpack limiting fire spread, officials and wind farm personnel decided to let the fire burn itself out rather than attempt suppression. Fire crews left the scene at around 9pm, roughly two to two and a half hours after the fire began. No injuries were reported. Sequitur Renewables personnel were due to inspect the turbine afterwards to assess damage and plan recovery. A cause had not been released at the time of reporting.

The turbine's remote ridge-top location and limited access made direct firefighting impractical, and responders judged that surrounding snowpack reduced the risk of the fire spreading to nearby vegetation, so it was allowed to burn out under monitoring.

  1. Remote, difficult-to-access turbine sites require pre-agreed protocols for when to let a fire burn out versus attempting active suppression.
  2. Environmental conditions such as snowpack or vegetation dryness should be factored into real-time decisions on fire response at wind sites.
  3. Operators should maintain clear communication channels with local volunteer fire services and emergency management agencies, since these are often first responders to remote turbine fires.
