What happened
About 200 gallons of diesel were spilled near the Meta Data Center compound in Altoona, Iowa, on 3 December 2025, during routine maintenance on an on-site generator. The generator was being serviced by Turner Construction Company, according to WHO 13 and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. According to an incident report obtained by WHO 13 under a Freedom of Information Act request, a worker was filling the generator's fuel tank, the fuel was not shut off, and the worker walked away, so the tank overfilled.
Most of the diesel spilled onto the temporary asphalt pad beneath the generator, but some entered a storm drain that leads to an on-site retention pond. The pond outlet was closed and the pond was covered in ice, which, according to the DNR, contained the fuel. Employees reportedly used a spill kit, and an industrial cleaning company removed contaminated snow, washed the asphalt and cleaned the stormwater pipes and pond surface.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources received a spill report about three hours after the spill and its investigation was ongoing. No injuries or equipment damage were reported.
Contributing factors
According to the incident report, the fuel was not shut off during filling and the tank was left unattended, causing it to overfill. Some diesel reached a storm drain connected to the on-site retention pond. According to the DNR, the closed pond outlet and ice cover contained the fuel in the area where the storm drain enters the pond.
Lessons learned
- Generator refuelling should be attended throughout, or use automatic shut-off or high-level alarms so that an overfill cannot occur if the operator steps away.
- Sites should map stormwater drainage routes near fuel filling points and be ready to close outlets quickly as a containment measure.
- Contractors carrying out generator maintenance should be briefed on fuel transfer procedures, spill kit use and the regulator reporting timeline.
