A fire broke out at a private wind farm in the Narakkalliya area in Norochcholai, Sri Lanka, on the evening of 29 August 2021. Norochcholai Police reported that the fire started at around 8.30 p.m. on one of the towers attached to a wind turbine. The pole collapsed and the fire spread to the lower area. A technical fault is suspected. No injuries were reported.

A technical fault in the wind farm is suspected to have caused the fire. The nature of the fault was not reported.

  1. Inspect tower and nacelle connections regularly for developing faults that could lead to fire.
  2. Ensure rapid access and suppression options for fires high on turbine structures.
