Generator fault at Norochcholai coal plant after grid reconnection

2025Published 23 Oct 2026Responsible editor: Chief Editor

The third generator at the Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai, Sri Lanka, was added to the national grid and then malfunctioned again due to a technical fault, according to a Sunday Times report. The report says the loss of this generator removes 270 MW from the national grid. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, the power sector regulator, said there would be no power cuts, and it said it would not allow the Ceylon Electricity Board's proposed scheduled power interruptions between 25 January and 4 February.

A headline from Ada Derana links the generator failure to an island-wide blackout, but the article text could not be retrieved, so this link is not confirmed. The year of the incident is not stated in the sources reviewed and is provisional.

The source describes the fault as technical, without giving a specific cause. The report says the generator had malfunctioned again, which may indicate a recurring fault after it was returned to service. The source does not say whether the fault was in the generator, its control systems or auxiliary equipment.

  1. Returning a unit to the grid after a repair should include checks that confirm the cause of the earlier fault has been addressed before full load is applied.
  2. Operators should track repeat faults in the same unit, as recurring faults can point to an unresolved root cause.
  3. When a large unit is lost, operators should plan for reserve margin and communicate clearly with the regulator and the public about the risk of supply interruptions.
